Gavin Newsom Is Not the Leader America Needs
As America stands at a crossroads, leadership has never been more critical. We need leaders with a proven track record of solving problems, making tough decisions, and delivering real results—not politicians who rely on slick rhetoric, media posturing, and empty promises. Yet, some within the Democratic Party seem eager to elevate California Governor Gavin Newsom as their next national figure. That would be a disastrous mistake.
Newsom’s tenure in California has been defined by mismanagement, dysfunction, and a refusal to take accountability for the state’s deepening crises. His leadership style is rooted in theatrics rather than tangible results, and the consequences have been devastating for millions of Californians. If his tenure as governor is any indication, his ascent to national leadership would be a warning sign for the country, not a cause for celebration.
A State in Decline
Under Newsom’s watch, California has seen a mass exodus of businesses and residents, with people fleeing the state due to skyrocketing taxes, unaffordable housing, and rampant crime. Once an economic powerhouse, California is now synonymous with high costs and low quality of life. The state’s population is shrinking for the first time in its history, and the reasons are clear:
Homelessness: California has the largest homeless population in the country, and it has only worsened under Newsom’s leadership. Despite pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into so-called solutions, encampments have spread, crime has risen, and the problem remains as dire as ever.
Crime: Cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles have become symbols of lawlessness, with smash-and-grab robberies, open drug use, and unchecked violent crime making daily life more dangerous. Newsom has failed to support law enforcement in meaningful ways, opting instead for policies that embolden criminals while leaving residents vulnerable.
Economic Mismanagement: California’s business climate has become so hostile that even major corporations—long willing to put up with high taxes and regulations—are packing up and moving to states like Texas and Florida. Small businesses struggle under the weight of excessive red tape, and the state’s projected budget deficit has ballooned to nearly $70 billion.
A Leadership Style Built on Optics, Not Outcomes
Newsom’s leadership is defined by press conferences, photo ops, and sweeping promises—but not results. He positions himself as a progressive champion while dodging accountability for his failures. Consider his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic: While enforcing some of the strictest lockdowns in the country, shuttering businesses, and keeping children out of schools, he dined maskless at the French Laundry, an exclusive restaurant catering to the elite. It was a perfect encapsulation of his governance—rules for the public, but not for him.
Even when presented with golden opportunities to turn California around, Newsom has failed. He has governed a state with immense wealth, natural resources, and innovation, yet the outcomes speak for themselves: more homelessness, more crime, more businesses leaving, and more Californians struggling to afford to live in their own communities.
The Democratic Party Can—and Must—Do Better
For the good of the country, Democrats must look beyond Gavin Newsom. America needs leaders who put results over rhetoric, who solve problems rather than campaign on them. If Newsom is the future of the party, it signals a troubling message: that style matters more than substance, that political theater outweighs governance, and that failure carries no consequences.
The challenges facing the nation are too great to be entrusted to another leader who thrives on optics while the people he represents suffer. The Democratic Party—and America—deserve better.
